Welcome to the latest edition of So i herd u liek interviews??. This is the 24th volume in a series of interviews aimed at finding out about emoticonists from the deviantART community.
This series links with the weekly volumes of 'so i herd u liek emotes??' which have now been running since October 2008
The emoticonist</u>
This volume’s featured emoticonist is mintyy. Mintyy can often be found around the community and is probably best known for creating her awesome Emoticonist support stamp. I managed to catch up with her for an interview.
The interview</u>
How and when did you get into making emoticons?
I started making emoticons to be specific...on 18th april 2009. I was after a crisis in life and I couldn’t draw anything actually. Then I started pixeling in the end of march and after making a pixel art entry for SparklyDest’s pumpkin contest I decided to try making an emoticon!
When you first started making emotes, did you use any tutorials?
I did used a random tutorial for how to shade an emoticon.(But it was not the shading I use at the moment)But I really cannot remember whose it was. But other than that. Nope.
Are there any particular tutorials you have found/created since that you would like to suggest?
Yes. I think LeoLeonardo made some nice tutorials regarding animation and shading. Then Synfull made some tutorials aswell all being emoti-themed. Oh I think I would name every tutorial I have seen made by emoticonists probably but then, the interview would be too long. And Yes I did one myself but it was not about emoticons so...not important xD
Where do you get your inspiration / ideas from?
Hmm.I don't xD.They just pop in my head xD
Do you try to stick to one particular style and technique, or do you prefer to experiment?
I think when it comes to my shading I did experimented a lot. But now I am happy with it. its so shinyyyy. But when it comes to animation, oh yes I experiment a lot. I dont think I have my own style anyways xD
Are there any particular qualities that you feel can make an emote stand out from any other?
Qualities? I don't know actually. Maybe a nice shading or animation? I have no clue xD
Which programs have you used to create your emoticons? Are there any you can suggest?
I always, always used Photoshop & Image Ready. I would suggest Photoshop + ImageReady. Its easy to use but its a annoying when you do a more complicated animation. D:
Roughly how long does it take you to go from concept to finished emoticon?
From 1 hour to...Hmm...The whole eternity when I would consider my Support all emoticonists stamp xD
What methods have you used for shading? Do you have a preference?
I always have been using pixelling!By hand and pixel by pixel. Gradient is for me ...well...kinda cheating xD
Are there any particular effects you've found difficult, or have been unable to create?
Not yet. But I think I will have problems making 3d... And probably some mist-clouds disappearing ;x;
Which are 3 of your favourite emotes from your personal gallery?
Well.My emoticon flower series is one of my best projects i have done this far. And from all of them I love the Rose one. Because it has a really personal reason behind it. I love my orange emoticon aswell. Ah it almost killed my eyes and hand while pixelling. But I like the outcome. And probably one of my newest ones, because I really do feel that way too often xD And I even sometimes do look like that making an umm with my fingers xD
Is there a particular emote in your gallery you would you like to see get more attention. If so, why?
Not really ^^' The one that is not being submited yet xD
Are there any particular emoticonists you would like to see get more exposure?
stevanov! He is quite new in the community but his emoticons are adorable! And! jagscupid! Being on dA for 6 years could mean he got enough exposure but his works deserve a hella more. And ... AutumnOwl and KlauS92 and renekotte. 3 new and very aspiring and promising emoticonists in our community. I can see a lightful and colorful future before them!
How did you come up with your emoticon character?
My emoticon character? Oh jeez. I am a Mint lover. My name is mint related so my character had to be minty! and since I love clovers too. I had to combine those two things x3
Do you feel like the emoticon community has progressed during your time as an emoticonist?
Well. I have not long been an emoticonists but yeah. It gained a lot new skilled people. What’s more, some made the epicness of our community more epic like Zikes and Nilli updating the Zikes script and making EmoteCloud. And Joel and Karen being such awesome GMs for the last few months!
Where would you like to see emotes go in the future?
Hmm.I dont know.Maybe we will see someday an emoticon movie XD`?*slow*
Are there any trends or styles you'd like to see less of in the gallery?
Less miscats plz?
Is there any advice you would like to give to new emoticonists?
Believe in yourself! Practice! And! Love the community! It gives you much support and advices!
Is there anything else you would like to say?
YES! *GO HUG ELI FOR BECOMING AN FANARTGM! and! Anyone has mint ice cream with choco splits to share with me? oh and maybe if you’re European drop in on #europe chat? x3 or not? maybe not xD
If and won the lottery together, what would they do and how would they spend the money?
think they would have sex! and they would make cute small blanklas! and make a BIG CLOVER statue!
Features</u>
I adore mintyy’s flower series and pink lily is one of my favourites. The bright colours really grab your attention and the pixel work is really awesome.
Despite being one of mintyy’s earliest emotes, last rain drop is still an amazing piece. The animation and pixelling worth well together to make a brilliant piece of animation with a really original idea
Bee is a rather simple, but simply adorable emote.

Winds of change
Whilst I'm not overly active on dA any more, I still pop in once in a while and thought I'd do a bit of a life update for anyone else who still lurks around here. The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind for me. At the end of June, the software company I worked for failed to get the investment it needed, meaning that I lost my job along with the majority of out Dev and QA team. I'd been working in the same company for nearly 10 years and really enjoyed my time there, so it was a shame I had to leave. Luckily for me, I had quite a long notice period (9 weeks) which was long enough to find a new job and then have a few weeks off. This gave me the chance to spend a lot of time with my sister and her family (who were visiting from America) and go for a number of walks in my local national park called The Peak District. I started my new role a few weeks ago. I think it's going ok but it will take some time to adjust to working in a new company. It didn't help that I caught
Welcome to 2023!
Happy New Year! I just realised that I didn't write a single journal in 2022. Whoops. I am still lurking around here and pop in a few times a week, but I haven't had much to post/update. So what was 2022 like for me? Quite mixed. The year started off strong. I spent the Spring months working on my house - I painted the fences, shed and decking, decorated a blank wall in my office and then spent a few days painting my bathroom. Over the summer, things hit a bump in the road. I had a number of fun plans arranged, which all had to be scrapped as I (and a friend staying with me) caught Covid. Fortunately no long lasting effects, and we both made the most of the situation, but it wasn't quite the relaxing week we had planned. Oh well. In Autumn, I tried to make up for missed opportunities, and think I took on a little too much at once. I filled a lot of my free time with meetups or walks or other house improvements, which resulted in feeling exhausted since around the end of
NaNoEmo Roundup 2021
With the blink of an eye it's now December and NaNoEmo has finished for another year. It has been an absolute delight to see a number of emoticonist take part, breathing some life back into a community that is dormant for much of the year. To add to the celebrations, two of the entries received a Daily Deviation (DD) and one emoticonist ( @MerelyCubed) managed to complete the "30 in 30" challenge - a truly impressive achievement. Without further ado, here are a selection of the entries from this year: @MerelyCubed 30 entries @Phlum 6 entries @BlissfullySarcastic 7 entries @nillemotes 11 entries Emotes submitted privately
Please Sir, can I have some more?!
Within the blink of an eye it seems to be August, and I'm really starting to wonder where the year has gone. I can't say I have a load of stuff to update this journal with, but I fancied an update nonetheless. I'm now well settled in the new house. In April/May I managed to finish unpacking most of my belongings, so it started to feel like it was my home rather than just a place I was living. In June I had the boiler replaced, which was an experience and a half, but I'm glad that's all done. I have the windows to replace and some work to do in the loft, but I'm just taking some time out to enjoy the house as it is before it descends into chaos again. I was also pleasantly surprised when I found a new hedgehog that visits the house. I was a little sad that I left the others behind when I moved, but I discovered him outside the shed one night and have been looking after him ever since. He's been given the nickname Oliver after one late night session where he threw his food bowls
