Description

This is my entry for the May EMTC on the theme of 'rain'.

It's been a long time since I entered and EMTC so earlier this month I thought I'd give it a shot. The theme or rain really interested me as it would challenge me to come up with an effective rain effect to add to the canvas.

About a week ago whilst taking a break from revision I came up with the idea of doing a scene from the film 'Singin' in the rain' and my first thought was the famous shot of the guy on the lamppost.

My first attempt went really badly as I tried adding perspective to the background. However, today I decided to give it another shot. Using the image as a reference I created a scene based on the original (with a few tweaks) and then placed the emote in.

To make sure I stuck at the emote (since the deadline is only hours away) I decided to pixel on join.me and a number of people came to watch. My initial intention was to keep the emote static, but a couple of people mentioned that it would look great animated. Normally I shy away from this sort of thing, but after a few months off proper emotes I decided to challenge myself and give animation a go.

Because of the way I make frames in one program and animate them in a second I generally like to keep animation simple. Normally I make each complete frame as I go along and hope for the best. However today I took a far longer process to give the animate the best chance. I first animated the body, then the hands, followed by the face, umbrella and shadow. Between adding each item I tested the animation and did a large number of tweaks which meant I had to open and re-save 33 frames each time.

I then worked on the rain which I worked out a simple but effect way of looping through 10 frames then went back and added this to all of the frames.

This is the end result. I think it may be one of the most complex but most rewarding animations I've ever done. It proved to me that I can do this style of animation if I try, it just takes a but if motivation and commitment. All in all it took about 4 and a half hours, and thanks to anyone that came to watch to help the time pass :)
