The other day I tweeted that I fancied making a large pixel piece but was lacking ideas. `Mirz123
came back to me with the idea of a Lion King piece and being one of my two favourite Disney films (The other being Tangled for which I made this piece
) the idea appealed.
I decided I wanted to have a go at pixelling Pride Rock so the obvious scene to use was the one at the start with the presentation of Simba. Pixelling Pride Rock was actually easier than I imagined and turned out better than I envisioned. I chose not to include other animals at the bottom as I'm not sure I could get them to look right from the rear, and didn't want to detract from the background.
Whilst the sky in the reference picture I used for the rock was blue based, I opted for an orange-y sky after receiving some feedback from a few other artists. The clouds were certainly the hardest part. I tried a number of styles but I wasn't able to make any look right, so opted for a style I've used a couple of times to prevent the background looking too empty.
I did make a concious effort to try and keep the numbers of colours used as low as possible by reusing different colours from the existing palette for the clouds, borders and tree leaves. All in all I managed to reduce it to 49 colours including emotes, 26 without them - a fact I am really proud of.
In the process of making this I have a number of copies which show my progress. I decided to string them together and you can view them below:References
