FAQ

Karen's FAQ

What programs do you use to make emotes?
I use 2 programs - PaintShop Pro X2 to make the individual frames and then Ulead Gif animator 5 to animate the frames together

How do you make an emoticon?
That's not something I can easily explain here. However, there are over 200 different emoticon tutorials over at Emotication, or you can check out my personal tutorials here

What programs would you suggest for making emotes?
There are a range of different programs out there and its about finding one (or two) that suit you. There's a list of free programs and trials on this page which is a good place to start

How do I use your emotes in a comment?
I've written a nice tutorial to explain this which you can find here. You can also check out my list of plz accounts on this journal

Will you make me an avatar?
I sadly no longer take free personal avatar requests. However you can check out my commission details on this page and my list of free to use avatars here

Will you comment/critique an emote I made?
As long as you ask politely, sure :) It may take me a while to get around to it, but I really don't mind. Just send me a link in a comment or note.

What is Emote Secret Santa?

EmoteSecretSanta is a fun community project which runs each winter for the emote community. The aim of the project is to encourage emoticonists to make a special gift for a fellow community member and share some art around the holiday season.

How does it work?

Anyone interested in joining the project must send a note to the group (details below) before the sign up deadline.

Once the deadline has passed, each person will be assigned one emoticonist for whom them must make a themed emote gift. In return, they will receive an emote from someone else in the Secret Santa.

These gifts are made in secret, uploaded to Sta.sh and sent to the group via note. On Christmas day all of the gifts will be revealed in an article featured on EmoteSecretSanta.

Who can take part?

The Secret Santa is open to anyone who can make emoticons. It doesn't matter your background or religion - gifts can be made around an alternative theme.

However, you must be prepared to make an emote on the theme given to you. This could be anything from a snowman to a fire breathing dragon, so might not be the best project for someone who has only grasped the basics of the art form.

You must also be able to make an emoticon within the time scale provided. Therefore this project might not be suitable if you know you will be very busy during this period.

How do I sign up?

To join the Emote Secret Santa please send a note to the EmoteSecretSanta group.

This note should contain any themes/ideas you would like to see in your gift. It should also include a link to any OCs (Emote characters) you would like to see the gift feature, and detail anything else of importance e.g. You celebrate Hanukkah rather than Christmas.

Please note:

By sending a note you are committing to making a gift within the Secret Santa. Once the names have been distributed it is unfair if you opt to drop out as you will receive a gift from the community without providing one in return.

Whilst we understand that sometimes unexpected problems do occur, it will be disappointing if someone doesn't take part because they can't be bothered or don't like their assigned theme.

Dates and Deadlines

Friday 28th Nov - Sign up close
All sign-up notes must be received by Friday 28th November, 11.59pm GMT (UK Time).

Monday 1st Dec - Assignments Sent
By 1st December, 11.59pm GMT (UK Time) a note will be sent to each participant to let them know who they will be making a gift for.

Friday 19th Dec - Gift Deadline
All gifts must be created and submitted to your Sta.sh account before Friday 19th December 11.59pm GMT (UK Time).

Reminders will be sent at regular intervals until your gift is submitted.

Thursday 25th Dec - Presents revealed
On Christmas day the presents will be revealed. :dummy:

Questions and Comments

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please either leave a comment on this journal or send a note to the group.

Please also lend us a helping hand an help promote this event throughout the community.

I look forward to seeing your sign up notes in the near future.

About Me

About me

My name is Karen though a number of people around dA call me Syn or Synfull. I joined deviantART back in 2006 as an art appreciator, but over time I have tried my hand at a number of different art forms, before eventually finding my place in emoticons.

Offline,I recently graduated from the University of Birmingham, UK with a degree in Computer Science (Programming) . I like to spend my free time relaxing with friends, watching films, travelling, dabbling in crafts, helping at my local Scout group or messing with one of my Rubik's cubes.

Please note:

Instead of thanking me for faves, please spend the time looking at stuck-in-suburbia's gallery

Doing well thanks. Just been insanely busy with my university work. However, with my course about to finish I've been exploring doing more art stuff again. Wouldn't might trying emoticons and pixel art again :giggle:

How are things with you?

Rather busy. Had a lot going on this year and as soon as one thing ends, another begins. So I haven't really had time to relax since about February. Equally I've started work, so that takes up quite a bit of time and sucks up a lot of my energy.

But apart from that, I've been doing ok
